Porcelain Crowns Placed by Our Crystal Lake Cosmetic Dentist to Protect & Improve Your Smile

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are a restorative solution designed to encase the entire visible portion of a tooth. Unlike fillings, which address only a small part of a tooth, crowns provide comprehensive coverage and protection. Our Crystal Lake cosmetic dentist is committed to helping you restore both the function and appearance of your damaged or decayed teeth with expertly crafted dental crowns.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is used when a tooth is so broken or decayed that a filling alone cannot effectively repair it. The crown acts as a protective shell that encases the entire visible portion of the tooth, providing strength and durability. Crowns are particularly useful for restoring a tooth’s original shape and are commonly used for teeth that have been significantly damaged. Although crowns can be made from various materials, the most common types include porcelain or a porcelain-metal mix, which closely resembles the look and feel of natural teeth.

How the Dental Crown Procedure Works

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to our Crystal Lake cosmetic dentist office.

First Visit:

1. Tooth Preparation: During the initial visit, Dr. Prasad will begin by reshaping the damaged tooth. This involves removing a portion of the tooth’s structure to ensure that the crown will fit properly and securely.

2. Impression: After reshaping, an impression of your tooth is taken using a special material. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom permanent crown will be crafted.

3. Temporary Crown: In the interim, a temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth and maintain functionality until the permanent crown is ready.

Second Visit:

1. Crown Placement: When you return for your second appointment, our Crystal Lake cosmetic dentist will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one.

2. Fit and Adjustments: The permanent crown will be checked for fit and color to ensure it matches your natural teeth. Adjustments will be made as necessary to guarantee comfort and a seamless appearance.

3. Cementing the Crown: Once satisfied with the fit, the crown is permanently cemented in place.
